~Pro-Cyclists diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes will speak at event to share experience & hope

WHAT: Assembly with Solvang area schoolchildren (grades 4-6 +). Team Type 1 pro cyclists will discuss their training camp here in the Valley; their preparations for their first time competing in the Amgen Tour of California and demonstrate how they manage their Type 1 diabetes as cyclists. They will also show off their racing bicycles and how they are different from the bikes the children ride. The 30-minute presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer and autograph session.

PLUS: The new 2009 Amgen Tour of California Education Booklets will be distributed AND the announcement made of the 2009 Solvang Stage 6 Student Essay Contest.

WHERE: Solvang School Gymnasium, Laurel Street entrance off Atterdag, downtown Solvang

WHEN: Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 2:15PM sharp

WHO: Team Type 1 Pro-Cyclists Ms.Morgan Patton (a second-year professional with Type 1 diabetes who finished second at the 2008 Kelly Cup Criterium); Willem Van den Eynde (a first-year professional cyclist with Type 1 diabetes from Belgium) and Dan Holt (a seasoned pro in his second year with Team Type 1 who also has a degree in meteorology) will speak with students.

WHY: This is an extraordinarily different professional cycling team because it was designed to raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes. Team Type 1 is conducting a pre-season training camp for the second year  in Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley from January 26-February 2, 2009; headquartered in Buellton.

ABOUT TEAM TYPE 1:
Phil Southerland and Joe Eldridge, a pair of avid cyclists with Type 1 diabetes, created Team Type 1 in 2004. In 2006 and 2007, the pair captained Team Type 1 to back-to-back victories in the eight-person team division of the Race Across America (RAAM). In 2008, the team grew to become a 15-rider Continental team that included four riders with Type 1 diabetes. In their inaugural pro season, Team Type 1 compiled 45 victories, including winning the team classification at the Tour de Beauce and the Vuelta Mexico, and placing two riders (Glen Chadwick and Moises Aldape) in the Olympic road race in Beijing. In 2009, Team Type 1 is growing again – to include a triathlon team, a developmental squad, a women's professional squad and two teams for RAAM: Team Type 1 and Team Type 2. The Type 1 athletes in these programs strive to instill hope and inspiration for people around the world affected by diabetes. The team encourages control of diabetes through diet, exercise and the use of the best treatment and technology available today.
